Two decades of grassroots journalism and community ownership in Northern Zambia.
Radio Mano was established in September 2003 and began official broadcasting on 4th March 2005. Based in Kasama, Northern Province, the station has spent two decades building a legacy of grassroots journalism and local empowerment, proving that when communities own their media, everyone benefits.
Radio Mano broadcasts on 89.3 FM to a 250km² radius, with 100% coverage in Kasama and Mungwi, and reach extending into Luwingu, Mporokoso, Chilubi, Lunte, Senga Hill, Mpulungu, Kanchibiya, and Chinsali. Programming is 95% Bemba, with the remaining 5% shared between English and Mambwe, ensuring every voice in our audience is represented.
What sets Radio Mano apart is who it belongs to: the community. Every element, from programming decisions to governance, is rooted in local voices. Regular feedback sessions shape our content, and community members actively contribute to what goes on air. Our Board of Directors oversees financial and operational decisions with full transparency and authority, building a station defined by accountability and public trust.
Radio Mano employs 21 permanent staff and is supported by 16 dedicated volunteers, men and women, with a strong focus on including young people. More than a workplace, Radio Mano is a training ground for Zambia's next generation of media professionals.
As a community station, Radio Mano operates within transmission limits set by the IBA, a real constraint given our growing listenership. But our ambitions don't stop there: within the next 10 years, we aim to launch our own community television station, extending our mission of development-focused, culturally relevant, people-powered media across Northern Zambia and beyond.
